This one-hour seminar explores how movie culture has evolved across generations—from the communal, politically charged, and often ideologically shaped experiences of Gen X and Millennials (Gen Y), to the fragmented, algorithm-driven viewing habits of Gen Z and Gen Alpha. Drawing on case studies from contexts such as Soviet-era cinema and Middle Eastern film culture, the session examines how cinema once functioned as a powerful social and cultural force, shaping collective identity and discourse. It then contrasts this with today’s landscape of streaming platforms, short-form content, and social media, where the meaning and experience of “cinema” is rapidly transforming. Ultimately, the seminar invites young filmmakers to critically reflect on their own relationship with film culture and consider how they can actively redefine and reclaim its role in a hyper-digital age.
